How to decorate your rented home for Autumn, Halloween, and Christmas (Damage-free!)

As the nights draw in, there is nothing quite like making your home feel cosy and welcoming. With autumn leaves falling, Halloween around the corner, and the festive season fast approaching, many of us are ready to bring out the blankets, wreaths, and fairy lights.

If you are renting, you might wonder how to get your space into the seasonal spirit without risking your tenancy agreement or your security deposit. The good news? You don't need to paint walls or drill holes to make your property feel warm, festive, and uniquely yours.

Here is our ultimate guide to renter-friendly seasonal decorating, along with a few friendly ground rules to keep in mind.

The Golden rule is to ask before you alter

Before jumping into big decor ideas, keep the fundamental rule of renting in mind, always ask for landlord permission before making any permanent or major structural changes, including:
  • Painting walls or putting up wallpaper (even "peel and stick" varieties can sometimes pull off paint or leave adhesive residue).
  • Drilling holes into walls, window frames, or masonry.
  • Changing light fixtures or built-in fittings.
Getting written approval first avoids misunderstandings later when it’s time to move out. Luckily, you won't need to alter a thing to achieve a fantastic look.

1. Master the art of soft furnishings

The easiest way to switch up your home’s vibe for autumn and winter is through textiles. They add instant warmth, texture, and colour without touching a single wall.
  • Autumn - Layer up with rust-orange, mustard, and deep forest green throw blankets and velvet cushion covers.
  • Halloween - Bring in dark, moody tones like plum or charcoal, complemented by faux-fur textures.
  • Christmas - Swap in tartan blankets, chunky knit throws, and rich red or emerald accents.
When the season ends, simply pack them away in a vacuum bag until next year!

2. Hang wreaths and lights without nails!

Decking the halls (and front door) usually involves hanging heavy items, but nails and sticky tape can leave damage or strip paintwork.
  • Command hooks & strips - these are a renter’s best friend. Use damage-free adhesive hooks designed for your wall or door type, and make sure to follow the removal instructions carefully when taking them down.
  • Over-the-Door hooks - perfect for hanging an autumn or Christmas wreath on your front door or interior doors without adhesives.
  • Tension Rods - place a light tension rod inside a window frame to hang fairy lights, garlands, or festive ornaments cleanly.
3. Glow Up with warm, safe lighting

As the days get darker, lighting makes all the difference in creating a cosy atmosphere.
  • Battery-Operated LED candles - real candles carry a fire risk and can create soot marks on walls and ceilings. LED candles offer the exact same warm flicker safely, and many come with convenient timers.
  • Fairy lights - string warm-white LED lights along bookshelf edges, wrapped around banisters, or arranged inside glass lanterns and jars.
  • Warm bulbs - swap out cool-toned lightbulbs in your floor and table lamps for warm white options to instantly make rooms feel cosier.
4. Style Your Surfaces

You don't need to hang things on walls to make a festive statement. Use sideboards, windowsills, mantlepieces, and dining tables to build seasonal displays.
  • Autumn & Halloween - display ceramic pumpkins, dried pampas grass, pinecones, and acorns in decorative bowls.
  • Christmas - arrange mini tabletop trees, garlands, snow globes, and festive greeting cards along flat surfaces.
One more thing!

When the festivities wrap up, take a few extra minutes to remove adhesive hooks gently and clean off any stray glitter or pine needles. Leaving the property clean and free from scuffs keeps your landlord happy and protects your deposit!
