4 Renter-friendly ways to manage a UK heatwave

When a UK heatwave hits, rental properties, especially older brick flats, quickly turn into ovens. Because you can’t install permanent air-conditioning, keeping cool is all about smart, non-destructive hacks.

Here's how to keep your property cool without risking your deposit.

1. The 'lockdown' window strategy:
The biggest mistake people make is leaving windows open all day. If it is hotter outside than inside, open windows just let the heat in.

  • Keep windows and blinds firmly shut (typically 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM) to seal out the hot air.
  • Once the outside air temperature drops below your indoor temperature, open windows on opposite sides of your property to create a cross-breeze and flush out the trapped heat.

2. Position your fans for maximum airflow:
Fans don't cool the air, they cool your skin. To actually lower room temperature, try these setups:

  • In the evening, point a box fan outward in an open window. This blows the hot air out, pulling cool air in through your other windows.
  • Place a bowl of ice directly in front of a fan to create a temporary, chilled breeze.

3. ⚠️ The viral hazard - 'Lightbulb Fans'
You may have seen viral videos on social media promoting 'socket fans', devices that screw directly into your lightbulbs to act as a ceiling fan.
We do not recommend these. They are highly unsafe and will fail your rental's EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report).

  • Standard UK light pendants are designed to support a lightweight bulb (under 100g), not a heavy, spinning motor. The continuous vibration can easily crack the fixture or pull the wiring out of the ceiling.
  • These cheap imports often lack proper earthing (grounding) and overload the low-amperage lighting circuit, posing a major safety hazard.
  • If your landlord's electrician spots one during an inspection, it’s an automatic failure, and any ceiling damage may come straight out of your deposit. Stick to floor fans.

4. Cool down your bed and electronics

  • Swap polyester sheets for 100% cotton or bamboo, which let your body heat escape.
  • Computers, TVs, and game consoles generate massive amounts of ambient heat. Turn them completely off at the wall plug when you aren't using them.
  • Fill a hot water bottle with cold water, freeze it for an hour, and tuck it under your sheets before bed.
