As we reach the end of the year, all of us at Ultralets want to wish you a relaxing and festive holiday season. Whether you are staying cosy at home or travelling to visit friends and family, we hope you have a wonderful break.
However, winter weather doesn’t take a holiday! To ensure you don't come home to any nasty surprises we have put together a quick "Festive Checklist" for your rental property.
1. Going away? Please do not turn the heating "off"
If you are planning to leave the property for more than a day or two to visit family, it is tempting to turn the heating off completely to save money.
When temperatures drop below freezing, water in your pipes can freeze and expand. This causes pipes to burst, leading to catastrophic flooding that ruins carpets, furniture, and personal belongings.
Instead, please follow these steps:
- The "Frost" setting: Most modern thermostats have a snowflake symbol ❄️. This is the "Frost Protection" mode. It keeps the heating off unless the temperature drops dangerously low, at which point it fires up just enough to stop pipes freezing.
- Manual Timers: If you don’t have a frost setting, please leave your heating on a timer for at least one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening at a low temperature (around 10–12°C).
2. Christmas Tree Safety 🎄
There is nothing quite like a real Christmas tree, but they do require a bit of care to stop them becoming a hazard.
- Keep it hydrated: Real trees can drink up to a pint of water a day. A dry tree is a significant fire risk. Check the water level daily!
- Lights out: Please remember to turn off your tree lights and any other decorative lights when you leave the house or go to bed.
- Check the wires: If you are using older fairy lights, give the wires a quick check to ensure they aren't frayed before plugging them in.
3. Quick Security Check
December is, unfortunately, a prime time for burglaries.
- Hide the boxes: Don't leave empty boxes for expensive electronics (TVs, consoles) outside your bin; it advertises what is inside your home. Fold them inside out or tear them up.
- Lock up: Double-check all windows are locked before you leave for your holiday trip.
From all of us at Ultralets, have a fantastic New Year!
